April 15, 1970 - Demonstration to Change Women's Image in the Media
CBS Affiliate KPIX, San Francisco
At the annual CBS shareholder meeting, held for the first time on the West Coast, a small group of feminists rose and denounced the corporation’s sexist programming and limited opportunities for women. In another part of San Francisco, outside the local CBS affiliate’s offices (KPIX), a similar message was made in public.
The demonstration included picketing, chanting and a gorilla-theater skit. Under a large banner identifying the group as Women Against Media Bullshit (W.O.M.B.), the protesters acted out the condescending way the media portrayed women and satirized how products were pitched. It was a lively, visual, theatrical demonstration, the perfect way to protest the policies of a business that sold entertainment.
