August 26, 1970 - San Francisco: On the 50th anniversary of women winning the vote, the National Organization of Women (NOW) spearheaded what would become the largest feminist demonstration in a generation. Protests were planned across the country calling for an end to sexism and presenting demands to make the full participation of women in society possible.
In some cities, like New York, large marches were held. Feminists in San Francisco organized what turned out to be one of the largest rallies held in the country that day. Two thousand people filled the main square.
No one in my generation had ever seen so many feminists gathered in one place. It felt like a homecoming.
